- The Truth About Permanent Eyeliner: What You Need to Know
Permanent eyeliner aka Permanent Lash Enhancement is one of our favorite treatments. With many styles like smokey, slightly winged, or soft shaded, it’s a subtle, beautiful, and timeless enhancement when done correctly. But like any cosmetic procedure, it’s not without its risks and we believe in helping you make informed decisions. We recently came across a public social media post that perfectly illustrates two common issues we want to bring to your attention. (This is not our work—we’re simply using it as a teaching moment.) Issue #1: Pigment Migration The first issue in the image is pigment that has migrated outside the corner of the eyeliner. This typically happens when tattooing is done too close to the outer corner of the eye (the outer canthus). Placement matters. Knowing the “safe zones” around the eye is essential. Tattooing into the corners of the eyes or past the last lash line is a basic no-go and it’s something every trained PMU artist should know, but unfortunately, not all do. To help you understand what to watch for: We never tattoo the waterline. It’s simply too close to the eye and EXTREMELY risky. The area contains delicate oil glands that, if damaged, can cause permanent dry eye. We also avoid tattooing the inner and outer corners of the eye for similar reasons: the skin is too thin, and the risk of pigment migration is VERY high. This is due to the capillaries being very close to the surface and the high risk of pigment entering the capillaries. This risk is high in mature or sun damaged skin. If you have very visible or raised capillaries, it may limit design options, but a skilled artist will guide you toward the safest, most flattering look. Issue #2: A Poor Attempt at Correction The second problem we noticed was how the original mistake was being “corrected.” Unfortunately, the technician attempted to cover the migrated black ink with skin-colored pigment - a decision that causes more problems than it solves. Why is this a bad idea? Skin-toned pigments contain titanium dioxide, a white substance used to create opacity in ink. While it may look fine at first, over time it mixes with the old black ink, and what you’re left with is a milky green mess that becomes more obvious as the tattoo fades and ages. Think: murky, blotchy, and impossible to fully remove. Unlike layers of makeup, ink doesn’t sit on top of the skin—it moves within it, and the body naturally tries to break it down over time. Even worse, titanium dioxide is notoriously difficult to remove. In large amounts, it can appear chalky or “cottage cheese”–like under the skin. If anyone suggests this as a cover-up method, it’s best to walk away—quickly. Final Thoughts We’re not sharing this to scare you, only to empower you. Tattooed eyeliner can be absolutely stunning and truly life-changing, but only in the hands of a knowledgeable, well-trained artist. Ask questions. Do your research. Trust your instincts. When done right, this treatment enhances your eyes in the most elegant, effortless way. Choose wisely and you’ll love the results for years to come. 💫

- My Permanent Eyeliner Disappeared!
All permanent makeup goes through several different stages as your skin heals. It’s not uncommon for clients to get freaked out when one morning they wake to find their PMU is looking weird...or has gone MIA. PMU = Permanent Makeup 😉 If your permanent lash enhancement or eyeliner becomes very light at some point during the healing process, this is a normal part of pigment settling & skin healing in 99% of the cases. The permanent eyeliner healing process entails several stages: Initially your PMU may look very dark Next, a thin film will form over the PMU once the injured skin starts to heal. As the flakes of epidermis detach, the pigment beneath will look Over the next few weeks, the pigment will darken again. (**This takes longer for 50-90 year old clients than 20-40 year old clients as the skin cycle lengthens as we age) Your personal timeline might be slightly different, & the saturation/color shifts may be more or less dramatic. Not everyone will flake if the skin has been worked with extreme care. Two main reasons for the Milk Skin Phase/Ghosting Phase of permanent eyeliner: Some of the pigment that is more superficial flakes away & new skin that closes up the punctures made with the needles looks very light. After, and during, a PMU session, the skin oozes lymph fluid as a response to the injury to the skin. The lymph fluid combines with blood, & since pigments are also a liquid, they also combine. When will it end? Most clients say that their PMU looks the lightest around day 10. From that point it will gradually darken back up, so it’s impossible to say exactly when the ghosting stage will end as it's a gradual process & depends a lot on age/immune system/healing of client. The PMU will reveal the final results by day 40. At this point you can have an accurate picture how the results have healed, and how much pigment you have retained. Now you can get your 6-8 week touch up. Due to the skin of eyelids (and lips) being so thin, there is only much area for pigment to be implanted. It is not uncommon to lose 30% to 60% of the color on the first application. Layering pigment in multiple session is preferred rather than overworking the skin. Only 3 passes are done to avoid excessive trauma to the skin.(overworking can also inhibit pigment from staying in the skin) The PMU will appear softer when completely healed because the color will be seen through the layers of the skin. At the touch up, any areas that healed lighter can be retouched & you can also go darker if you feel the healed results are too light. ***very very rarely a client will have retention problems. This can be due to a multitude of factors. We will assess this at the touchup appointment & make adjustments to improve retention**

- Types of Microblading Pigments
What are the ingredients? The ingredients are a combination of powdered pigments, glycerin, witch hazel, aqua, rosin, benzyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol. It is gamma-ray sterilized, vegan and cruelty-free. All ingredients can be found in the MSDS and can be downloaded from the website: HERE for Tina Davies. -Brows HERE for Everafter - Lips/Eyeliner What kinds of pigments are there? PMU pigments fall into two categories: Inorganic and Organic. ORGANIC PIGMENTS organic pigments are much brighter, richer, luminous and intense more translucent better colour retention more vibrant and easier to implant less resistant to sunlight, humidity and chemicals when you want to wash organic pigment of your skin its very hard because they stain a lot their are less stable but much easier to remove with laser the most important is they are shorter lasting (fading faster) INORGANIC PIGMENTS more matte and opaque colours little bit more difficult to implant more stable ( end the most used element is Iron) easy to wash from skin harder to remove with laser the most important longer lasting (fading slower) What does that mean for me? All brown pigments are actually made up of three colors: BLACK, YELLOW, RED - all in different levels depending on the color chosen. INORGANIC PIGMENTS: Our bodies tend to metabolize and process the BLACK & YELLOW more quickly. And the RED tends to hang around longer before fading. This can result in a pink tone around touchup time. ORGANIC/ PIGMENTS: Our bodies tend to metabolize and process the RED & YELLOW more quickly. And the BLACK tends to hang around longer before fading. This can result in a bluish tone around touchup time. HYBRID: A combo of the above to counteract or delay any of the above results. All Perma Blend pigments including Tina Davies are a blend of both organic and inorganic pigments and are identified as an “hybrid” pigment line. Is this normal? Yes, this is completely normal and happens to everyone at some point. Whether it be 9 months or 9 years. When you come in for your touchup we replace the pigment that has naturally faded and this neutralizes the unwanted tone. Watch the first 3 minutes of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lmo4zn8VxI COMPOSITION Organic/hybrid pigments contain both carbon pigments and mineral pigments. They are typically soluble and dissolve easily in water. Inorganic/iron oxide pigments are derived from mineral and salt compounds and are insoluble, separating in water. INTENSITY OF THE PIGMENT COLOR Organic/hybrid pigments have a very bright color/hue intensity whereas inorganic/iron oxide pigments are more earthy and muted. PARTICLE SIZE Organic/hybrid pigments contain carbon CI’s which are smaller, reflect more light, and are more transparent. Inorganic/iron oxide pigments have a larger particle size, reflect less light, and are not transparent. Despite carbon black being an inorganic, it has the smallest molecule size out of organic and inorganic pigments. PIGMENT DEPOSIT INTO THE SKIN Organic/hybrid pigments have smaller particle sizes and are much easier to implant into the skin. Inorganic pigments have larger particle sizes and are harder to implant into the skin. OPACITY Organic/hybrid pigments can be highly transparent depending on the amount of white and black CI’s whereas inorganic pigments are more opaque. LONGEVITY Organic/hybrid pigments will last for years and are considered “forever pigments” with little fading out. Inorganic/iron oxide pigments are much more forgiving and will fade out rapidly within 1-2 years. EFFECTS OF FADING & MAINTENANCE FREQUENCY Organic/hybrid pigment formulations that contain carbon black can look cool/ashy/grey after 2-3 years and will need to be "warmed-up" to shift the color back to a neutral hue/color. This can happen because the organic pigment ingredients such as red and yellow fade, leaving behind carbon black and white. Inorganic/iron oxide pigments can look very faded with an orange/red residual after approximately 1.5 years and will need to be “cooled-down” to shift the color back to a neutral hue/color. This can happen because as iron oxide black fades, it can leave behind the red and yellow inorganic/iron oxide pigments.
- My brows have changed changed!
Your brows will change! well, there it be in size, color, shape, density. Microblading was designed to only last a limited amount of time. And eventually fade away. With this also comes other changes related to the fading & pigment metabolization. Clients general come back for touchups every 9-24 months. This varies greatly due to variety of factors; UV exposure, aftercare adherance, retinol use, auto immune conditions, integrity of skin, skincare products, oily/dry skin, etc. If a client chooses to never recieve a touchup their microbladed brows should fade almost completely between 2-5 years depending on the above factors. PMU brows (ombre, tattooed, etc) will last much longer as the pigment is deposited deeper in the dermis that microblading. As pigment is metabolized in the body it may change to a slight red/salmon or blue/green tone. (This is NOT the same as the redness you will experience in the first few days - Skin is angry and injured, red in the skin is normal, especially during days 1-10 as the skin is freshly cut. They will be red as any cut on your body will be.) If it happens after a couple years, this is a completely normal part of the metabolization process. It may happen at 2 years, 5 years, or never! Again this is completely normal & the way different pigments compositions are processed and metabolized by your body. (if it happens within the first year, that means that the artist that you went to most likely was not using high-quality pigments) Don't worry, this can be fixed by an experienced artist who is skilled in color correction!) What happens quite a bit further down the road, and this is completely normal and the just way different pigments types and ingredients are processed and metabolized in your body. The next touch up will return the brow to the correct color. So, to sum it up...The reason your microbladed or permanent make up can change color can be due to the following: Within 12 months: Previous artist did not a use a high-quality pigment. Previous artist, did not go deep enough to deposit the pigment into the correct layer and depth of the skin, resulting in low pigment retention and super fast metabolization. Autoimmune conditions as well as many of the reasons HERE that are outside factors that increase the longevity of the microblading. Sun exposure Skincare Medications After 2 years: Artist used organic pigment + metabolization Artist used synthetic pigment + metabolization New autoimmune condition Sun exposure Skincare Medications So, what about the different types of pigments? All brown pigments are actually made up of three colors: BLACK, YELLOW, RED - all in different levels depending on the color chosen. ORGANIC PIGMENTS: Our bodies tend to metabolize and process the RED & YELLOW more quickly. And the BLACK tends to hang around longer before fading. This can eventually result in a bluish/greenish/ashy tone. INORGANIC PIGMENTS: Our bodies tend to metabolize and process the BLACK & YELLOW more quickly. And the RED tends to hang around longer before fading. This can eventually result in a pinks orange tone. Is this normal? Yes, this is completely normal and happens to everyone at some point. Whether it be 9 months or 9 years. When you come in for your touchup your artist will replace the pigment that has naturally faded and color correct if needed and this neutralizes the unwanted tone.

- How Does My Immune System Effect My Microblading Results? 🤔
**How does the immune system affect your degree of fading & results?** When the pigment is placed in the skin, it triggers an immune response in the body. The immune system kicks in to defend the body against the wound and to "eat" the foreign bodies (pigment). The immune system sends in fighter cells called macrophages and phagocytes. Think of these little guy's like the body's microbiological Pac-Men, they try to eat and envelop the foreign bodies in an effort to contain the threat, in this case our pigment. - If they "eat" the pigment molecule then it is flushed out of the body via the lymphatic system. - If they "envelop" the pigment molecule then the pigment spreads a bit, as it has tried to flush the invader but didn't get far. (this is why most clients strokes spread as they heal) When the body is breached by infectious agents, such as certain microbes, they encounter various parts of the immune system. In general, phagocyte is a broad term which refers to any cell which carries out phagocytosis. ??PHAGOCYTES?? (phag·O·cyte) A type of immune cell that can engulf large prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, foreign bodies or eukaryotic cells, such as yeast cells or dead cells to kill them, or small foreign particles to remove them from the circulation. ??MACROPHAGES?? (MA-kroh-fayj) A type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills microorganisms, removes dead cells, and stimulates the action of other immune system cells. Macrophage is a type of white blood cell which is a phagocyte. They are scavengers which constantly move around to kill microorganisms, remove dead cells and foreign bodies. Everyone heals differently. Healed results are highly dependent upon a multitude of factors. While, an experience artist can be a great judge of skin, types and ethnicities, resulting in certain unexpected healing results. There's many other factors that are out of the artists hands. A few examples of different healed results after the initial microblading session: These photos give you an idea of how differently each person can heal after their first session. But also people can fade almost completely after session 1 and it's important that they don't miss their 4-8 week touchup! This will replace strokes that have all but disappeared as well as reinforce strokes that have faded a bit. HERE you can find a post on other reasons your microblading can fade after the first session. Another very important and often overlooked reason for excessive (and repetitive!) fading are...AUTO IMMUNE CONDITIONS!! Years ago I had a lovely client that faded way more than I expected after her 4-8 week touchup. (when this happens, I always tell them to let me know if they have any issues with retention again over the next 6 weeks. I then extend a complimentary touchup to them) On her 4th time coming to see me I noticed psoriasis plaques on her arm. When I asked her about them she told me she was having psoriasis flare and had them all over her arms and torso! BINGO! Autoimmune disease happens when the body’s natural defense system can’t tell the difference between your own cells and foreign cells (or pigment!), causing the body to mistakenly attack normal cells (and pigment!). There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases that affect a wide range of body parts. Common autoimmune diseases in women include: Rheumatoid arthritis, a form of arthritis that attacks the joints Psoriasis, a condition marked by thick, scaly patches of skin Psoriatic arthritis, a type of arthritis affecting some people with psoriasis Lupus, a disease that damages areas of the body that include joints, skin and organs Thyroid diseases, including Graves’ disease, where the body makes too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism), and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, where it doesn’t make enough (hypothyroidism) of the hormone Type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the immune system damages the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas Symptoms of autoimmune disease may be severe in some people and mild in others. There are different degrees of autoimmune disease. The symptoms a person gets likely relate to multiple factors that include genetics, environment and personal health. Many of us don't even know we have one. (I've got 3!🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️) Be sure to be straight forward with your artist and honest on the consent form you fill out. This will allow them to explain any issues that you may experience
- Intuitively Speaking
It a crazy feeling when you realize that voice in your head isn't in your head at all! When what you though actually happens only minutes or hours later. When you realize that you need to trust that voice in your head, that feeling in your gut. Listen to it, come to recognize the tone and pitch, let it become familiar to you. Become comfortable following its gentle call to action. Walk away, set boundaries, make the decision. Don't push it away, yes it can be scary, but it is necessary. Take that step with unwavering confidence in yourself! It's easier than you think, after all, your heart always knows!
- My Microblading Faded...whyyyy?! 😭
Fading is a COMPLETELY NORMAL and EXPECTED part of the process. Between 3 and 14 days you'll experience what we call "milk skin" or "ghosting". This is part of the body's process of healing. As the skin is being repaired from the trauma of microblading, it becomes a bit thicker and opaque. This can hide the strokes beneath the skin. (Similar to when you pick off a scan and its shiny and "milky" looking underneath!) It's a huge freak out that a lot of clients experience. But don't worry! (Easier said than done, i know!) a As the skin continues it's healing process it again thins out and the strokes will reappear now that the skin is more translucent again. FADED AFTER 2 weeks? Due to the skin regeneration process, after the healing period the brows will appear lighter than original. Even with proper care, clients lose some strokes, which makes brows look uneven, lighter than expected, or may have even disappeared. This is absolutely NORMAL because your natural skin type & skin regeneration, this is not a process that the artist cannot control. That’s why around 60% of LUXX clients need a touch up, to ensure that the brows are even & the desired effect was achieved. The touchup reenforces strokes that have faded or seem to have disappeared...this pigment is there but needs a little help! NORMAL. Microblading is expected to fade after the first session. We generally expect around 20-30% fading, but results are highly dependent on each client's skin type, immune system, medications/skin care products used, pigment chosen, and aftercare adherence. "Normal" results with microblading cover a wide spectrum. From someone having perfect brows with a single session & not needing a touchup for 1-3 years...all the way to someone having a lot of fading, to the point they've all but disappeared. Again, absolutely normal. And that is what the 4-8 week perfecting touchup is for! :) Reasons some clients tend to experience more fading: oily skin sun exposure chemical peels acne prone skin taking antibiotics using retinol/retinoids auto immune conditions using certain medications alcohol use within 24 hours (thins blood) caffeine use within 24 hours (thins blood) taking fish oil supplements (thins blood) choosing a lighter color than artist recommends taking blood thinners (thins blood) (If you are bleeding too much during the treatment, this can interfere with the pigment implementation and push out pigments. Thus affecting pigment retention. Some pinpoint bleeding is normal, but excessive bleeding can ruin the whole process.) A majority of the time (aside from fading due to the ever present SUN here in Florida!) fading has to do with the amount of oil your skin produces. Signs of oily skin: "thick skin", large pores, excess oil, acne or pimples, less wrinkles than others your age. Some people just naturally produce more oils than others, the oil may push out your pigment making your retention after your first microblading session less than what you may have expected. Again, completely normal. Microblading is a two step process. - A 4-8 week perfecting touch up reinforces faded strokes. (we can see them, trust me!) - A 4-8 week perfecting touch up give us the ability to correct any areas that faded & allow you to make adjustments that you are now ready & feeling brave and confident enough to make! Such as: going with a darker color bringing brows closer together making brows thicker/more dense achieving a higher arch perfecting the symmetry due to minor swelling during the initial procedure normal and expected fading through the healing process So, yeah, lots of info! But those are the most common reasons for feeding as long as you have an experienced artist. Those are the most common reasons for your microblading fading. Just be sure to book just be sure to book your 4 to 8 week perfecting touchup so that we can get those faded strokes reinforced and bring those beautiful brows up to their full glory! 💫 UPDATE: Due to many requests ...as of January 1, 2018 LUXX has separated the price of initial microblading session + perfecting touchup session! They are now priced separately. Yayyy!! Why pay the full price for a touchup you may or may not need?! Now you can just pay for what you need!💗
